Dr. Mike Dugan

Mike received his Ph.D. in Animal (Swine) Nutrition from the University of Alberta in 1992 under the supervison of Dr. W.C. Sauer. After post docs studying amino acid metabolism with Drs. Mike McBurney and Guoyao Wu (U of Alberta, Texas A&M), lipid nutrition and analyses with Dr. John Kramer (CFAR-AAFC), and meat quality with Dr. Jennifer Aalhus (LRC-AAFC), he was given the opportunity to focus his research on meat lipids at AAFC-Lacombe in 1998. Mike was in the right place and time to be among the first to study the effects of feeding CLA to pigs on pork quality and body composition. Mike received the Canadian Soceity of Animal Science (CSAS) Award of Excellence in Nutrition and Meat Science in 2011, was President of CSAS in 2007, Associate Editor of the Canadian Journal of Animal Science (1999-2005) and received the CSAS Young Scientist Award in 1999. Mike enjoys golf, guitar and has recently taken up the violin again after putting it down for 38 years and remarkably it sounds as good as it did when he was encouraged to give it up at the age of 12.
